🧠 What is FocusZone?
FocusZone is a training platform with 10 concentration games that run
directly in the browser — no download, no app store required. The games train different
aspects of attention: memory, reaction, concentration, flexibility and more.
Device
Tablet, PC or laptop — no smartphone required
Account required?
Yes — to save scores and track progress
Games
10 games · 5–10 minutes per session each
⚕️ Important notice — Supplementary training
FocusZone is a supplementary training programme and not a replacement for
professional diagnosis or therapy. The platform supports an existing treatment and serves
as a progress documentation tool — it cannot replace a doctor, psychologist or therapist.
For questions about attention disorders, always consult a qualified professional.
💡 Getting started tip
Try all 10 games at least once — each game trains something different.
You don't need to be "good" at a game to benefit from it.
📱 PC, tablet or phone — everything works!
FocusZone runs on PC, tablet and smartphone — with mouse, keyboard or touchscreen.
For comparable results: try to always play on the same device and with
the same input method. Switching (e.g. from mouse to touchscreen) affects
reaction times and makes comparison with earlier results more difficult.

📋 Setting a daily note
Before playing, you can add a short note for the current day.
This is automatically saved with every session and will later appear
in the evaluation alongside your results.
What can I note?
There are prepared quick-select chips:
💊 Medikinet
💊 Ritalin
🚫 No medication
😴 Tired
😤 Hyperactive
😊 Feeling good
If you select a medication, a field appears to enter the dosage (in mg).
You can also add a free-text note (max. 80 characters).
Why is this important?
The daily note helps to better understand performance variations. When better results are
achieved on days with medication, this is a valuable indicator — both for you and for
the person supporting you.
Changing the note
You can update the daily note at any time via the profile menu → "Set daily note".
The new note will then apply to all sessions you play afterwards.
📊 Scores & leaderboard
The scores.html page (accessible via the "📊 Leaderboard →" link
on the Game Hub) shows all saved game results.
What will you see there?
🏆
LeaderboardThe best scores for all players per game, sorted by score
📈

Removing a connection
In the friends area, click Remove next to the name →
then confirm with Yes. The connection is removed immediately.
What can friends see?
In the friends list, others can only see your display name and your game results

🎯 The 10 games
Every game starts at level 1 and automatically gets harder when you do well —
and easier when it becomes too difficult. You don't need to configure anything.
Task: Cards are briefly revealed showing emojis, then turned face down.
Click on two cards that show the same emoji — find all pairs.
How to play
- Study all the revealed cards carefully
- When you're ready, click Ready →
- Now the cards are flipped — find the pairs!
- On error: brief penalty, then continue
What gets harder?
- More card pairs
- Less time to memorise
- Time penalty on errors (from level 3)
🥷
Number Ninja
Maths · Focus
Task: Maths problems fall from above. Solve them as quickly as possible —
enter the answer on the number pad and confirm with ✓ before the block reaches the bottom.
Important from level 4: Only solve RED tasks!
From level 4, coloured blocks also appear (blue, green, purple, yellow) with real maths problems.
You must ignore these — only answer the red blocks!
Number pad
- Layout like a phone (1–2–3 on top)
- ✓ confirms the input
- ⌫ deletes the last digit
- Physical keyboard also works
What gets harder?
- More blocks at once
- Multiplication & division added
- More coloured distractor blocks
- Blocks fall faster
💠
Pattern Catcher
Sequence Memory
Task: On a 3×3 grid, cells light up one after another.
Memorise the order, then click the same sequence afterwards.
How to play
- Watch carefully which cells light up in which order
- Then click the same cells in the same order
- Errors are immediately marked in red
What gets harder?
- Longer sequences (3 → 4 → 5 → … cells)
- 8+ cells is already very challenging
★
Focus Dash
Reaction · Impulse Control
Task: Circular targets briefly appear on screen.
Tap only the correct targets — ignore all others.
Rules
- Level 1–3: ★ (star) = tap · ✦ (other symbol) = ignore
- Level 4+: colour also matters — only green and blue are allowed
- Clicking wrong targets gives minus points
What gets harder?
- More forbidden colours added
- Targets disappear faster
- More simultaneous targets
💡
Signal Counter
Sustained Attention
Task: Symbols appear on screen and sometimes a tone plays at the same time.
Count only the moments when image AND sound occur simultaneously.
Enter the count at the end.
Note: Sounds without images and images without sounds don't count!
Only real image-sound matches count — ignore everything else.
How to play
- Watch and listen at the same time
- Count silently in your head
- Enter the number at the end and confirm
What gets harder?
- More signals and more distractors
- Sound and image are sometimes deliberately mismatched (from level 4)
- Sequence gets longer
🧭
Arrow Counter
Mental Arithmetic · Flexibility
Task: Arrows appear one by one.
→ adds 1 to the counter, ← subtracts 1.
You start with a number (e.g. 11). After the last arrow, enter the final value.
No running total shown!
You must keep track of the running total entirely in your head.
A yellow ring around an arrow indicates a direction change (← to → or vice versa).
How to play
- Start with the displayed number
- → = +1, ← = −1 — keep calculating in your head
- Enter the final value at the end
What gets harder?
- Longer sequences
- More direction changes
- From level 5: ↑↓ arrows as distractors to ignore
- Faster pace
🔭
Star Scanner DT
Dual-Task · Divided Attention
Task: You do two things at once:
search for symbol pairs (visual) and count tones (auditory).
The 3 phases
Phase A
Visual symbols only — no sound. This is the warm-up round.
Phase B
Tones only — no symbols. Count all the tones and enter the number at the end.
Phase C
Both at once! Search for symbols AND count tones. This is the real challenge.
Symbol pairs — what to click?
Symbol pairs such as ◉◉ or ◉▲ appear on the game field.
Click only on pairs with two identical symbols — ignore mixed pairs.
Each item has a small countdown bar; when it runs out, the item disappears.
Tip for Phase C
Try to scan the game field while simultaneously listening for tones.
This is hard at first — that's normal and gets better over time!
🌿
Herb Hunt
Visual Search · Search Strategy · Selective Attention
Task: On a large flower meadow, 450 small symbols are hidden.
Among them are two target plants: 🌿 herbs and 🍀 clover.
Find and mark all occurrences — as many as possible in 3 minutes.
How do you recognise the target plants?
All symbols are small and grey (black-and-white). The target plants differ from the
distractor flowers only by their shape — 🌿 and 🍀. All coloured flowers (roses, sunflowers,
tulips etc.) on the meadow are distractors and should be ignored.
Clicking & marking
- Click on a target plant → it is marked green with a number (order)
- Click on a distractor → brief red flash, no point (actually costs points!)
- The meadow is larger than the screen — don't forget to scroll / swipe
- The "Done" button ends the game early
After the game
Unfound target plants are highlighted in yellow so you can see where they were hidden.
In the therapist dashboard, your search path is also visible as a chart.
Tip: Systematic searching pays off
Work through the meadow row by row — from top left to bottom right.
Jumping around randomly makes it easier to miss plants and waste time.
Your search strategy is recorded in the background.
Score
Score = hits × 80 + remaining seconds × 5 − wrong hits × 50
⚜️
Pathfinder
Spatial Memory · Visuospatial · Sequence
Task: On a dot grid, dots light up one after another — each with a small number.
This is the path you must memorise. Then tap the dots in exactly the same order.
How does a round work?
- The screen shows "Memorise path!" — watch which dots light up
- The numbers show you the order (1, 2, 3 …)
- Tap the dots in the same order, then press "Done"
- Green = correct path · Red = your errors
Does it get harder?
- The higher the level, the longer the path (3 → 4 → 5 → … dots)
- The display time gets shorter too — you need to react faster
- From level 5, the grid grows: 3×3 → 4×4, from level 9 → 5×5 dots
- From level 6, diagonal connections are added — the path no longer runs only horizontally/vertically
- From level 12, the path can also cross itself — that's when it gets really tricky!
- The level adjusts automatically: 2 correct → level up · 2 errors → level down
Tip: The numbers help you!
Each flashing dot briefly shows its step number. Say the numbers out loud
("one … two … three …"), it helps to keep the pattern in memory.
Score
Per correct step: 40 points × combo multiplier. Perfect round: additionally path length × 30 bonus points. Combo increases with each error-free round (max. 2.5×).
💡 Tips & FAQ
When should I play?
- Ideally daily — 1–2 games is enough
- At a similar time of day if possible
- Not when you're very tired or distracted
How long per session?
- A game typically takes 5–10 minutes
- The game ends automatically after a set time
- Try to play through to the end — your score is only saved then
The level is too hard!
- The system adjusts automatically
- After 2 bad rounds in a row, the level drops again
- Just keep playing — no manual adjustment needed
Is my data saved?
- Yes — but only game results, levels and optional daily notes
- No tracking, no advertising
- Data stays on the ruthner.at server
Forgot account / password gone?
What happens to my data?
- If you don't use your account for a long time, we may delete it after a certain period.
- You can also delete your data yourself at any time, or request deletion by email.
- Details can be found in "Imprint & Privacy".
Audio not working
- Check browser volume
- Disable mute on the device
- Audio is important for Signal Counter and Star Scanner DT!
What can friends see?
- Others can only see your display name and your game results (scores and levels)
- No email address, no daily notes and no other personal data
Does FocusZone definitely work?
- Not guaranteed. There is research evidence that targeted attention training can improve certain abilities.
- However, the strength of the effect may vary from person to person.
- FocusZone is a practice tool, not a miracle cure.
